I was at Fire Island National Park (FINS) this afternoon in hopes of capturing the “supermoon” rising behind or close to the lighthouse. The HUGE moon did rise, unfortunately it was 30 minutes before the sunset so…not so good photographically. It was still a site to see! Hopefully another time.
Not all was lost. I arrived early trying to plan the best location for the moonrise and just enjoy the beautiful autumn afternoon. I hadn’t taken the walk up to the lighthouse in quite some time, so I enjoyed a leisurely stroll. I did find a new feature at the foot of the lighthouse, a 13′ x 13′ piece of wreckage possibly a remnant of the last voyage of the Ship Savannah in 1821.

The right side of my brain took over and I started thinking about an old ship sailing to the NY harbor in the 1820’s during a terrible storm. This is where I ended up.

I find it ironic: “Tropical Storm Ian uncovered the piece of her wreckage that began its journey westward with the tides, where it was pulled from the beach east of Robert Moses Field 5”. A storm destroyed her, and storm found her.

I am sorry about the bad timing. I was hoping to see the moon tonight too, but clouds got in the way. I liked your story about the wreck, and the photographs.
