Today I had the opportunity to visit and photograph a 5K run organized by the Suffolk County Council of Boy Scouts USA and the Andrew McMorris Foundation. After noticing the signs for this event over the past 2 years, I finally decided to check it out. Initially, I assumed its name was a play on words related to the movie Top Gun, but after conducting some research, I now understand the true significance behind it. To provide context, the run takes place on what once was the runway used by Grumman Aerospace.
This event is a celebration of a very special young man, who tragically lost his life September 2018 when he was struck by a drunk driver while hiking with his Boy Scout Troop. Today, on what would have been Andrew’s 18th birthday, the community commemorated his passion for aviation and scouting.
This little fellow’s name is Marble; he is 11 years old and frequently joins his mom for runs, including todays.
What’s a run without music and balloons!
Before the 5K run, there is a Fun Run for those under 12.
The little ones were definitely brave to face the cold and wind.
On your mark, Get Set, Go!
I know the sky is blue and the clouds are beautiful, BUT the temps were in the low 40’s and the wind was gusting at 45 mph.
These two girls were braving the cold to support their runner Dad. It’s heartening to see families come together to support such a wonderful cause.
As the runners crossed the Finish Line their names were announced, and they could see their time. Congratulations to all the participants for their determination and braving the not so perfect temps.
I went home a took a really long HOT shower to defrost myself 🙂
