They Have Arrived!

I have a “bird shooting gallery” set up in my yard with visibility from my office. I have counted 42 species in my yard, most of them are visitors year round but I always look forward to May when some of my favorites show up. I am always amazed when the Baltimore Orioles and Rose Breasted Grosbeak show up pretty much on the same day every year! This year the orioles showed up a day early, April 30th and just like clockwork the Grosbeak shows up within 2 days after. The next to arrive, which is usually a week after these 2, are the hummingbirds. Now I know spring has finally arrived on Long Island!

  1. All these years of birding and I never saw a White-Crowned Sparrow. Last night as I was getting ready to shower I looked out my window and there was one at the feeder happily eating some corn that was on the ground. Sure would have loved to taken a photo of it but that would be hard to do at that time. lol
