Discovering Expo 98 Legacy: Photos of Lisbon’s Park of Nations

I returned home this week from my second trip to Lisbon in less than 2 years. This time with a group of photographer friends. We had a wonderful time exploring the city and I made sure I did some of the things I didn’t get to do last time…like take a ride on a tram 🙂 Those photos to come in the near future.

Today I will be focusing on my visit to the Park of Nations. This area was the site for Expo 98, a world trade fair hosted in May – September of 1998. The theme of the fair was “The Oceans, a Heritage for the Future” When the fair was over, the area continued to build up and has become one of the trendiest areas of the city.

The Oceanario de Lisboa (aquarium)

I spent a few hours walking through the aquarium, beautifully planned out to view the bottom of the ocean all the way to the top.

Mascot to the Oceanario…his name is Vasco. Think back to your history studies and the name Vasco da Gama should ring a bell.
MEO Arena Now a concert hall with the ability to host 20,000 people
Pavilhao de Portugal Currently owned by the University of Lisbon
Pavilhao de Portugal. I was told the concrete canopy is the longest unsupported span in the world. The architect was Alvaro Siza Vieira.

I would love for you to share your thoughts about the area for anyone that has been here.

As always, I provide links to more detailed information highlighted in red.

Thank you Judy for sharing a little part of my city. This new neighborhood is totally different from what people usually see when they visit Lisbon and stay just downtown. There is a lot of interesting architecture! The Gare do Oriente train station, the Vasco da Gama bridge, many buildings like the Portuguese Pavilion, and

    a major attraction: The Oceanario.

I wish you had a chance to visit MEO Arena (previously know as Pavilhão Atlântico) as the interior wooden roof is worth seeing.

I can’t wait to see your other photos from Lisbon!!! 😊
