Personal Project Series

Personal projects are a way to push your skills as a photographer and push your comfort level as well. I have embarked on a such a project; it will likely take close to a year to complete it.

The north fork of Long Island has always been heavy in agriculture, it remains so today despite the sprawl of residential areas. The project I have taken on is to capture, using mostly photographs, the essence of the “family farm”over the four seasons. I chosen about 8 different farms to visit and get to know the families that run them. I started last week with Ty Llwyd farm in Northville. They raise hens (over 1,000), dairy cows and seasonal produce. The farm has been in the family since 1870 and they only sell what they produce. I spoke with David (owner) for quite some time and he was happy to share the history and some stories. I look forward to going back in a few weeks to see the changes that the warmer days will bring.

Feeding time. The hay is also produced on their land
The cows will be set out to pasture in early May
One of many chicken coops
Structure next to the home where you can buy the eggs, milk and seasonal produce.

  1. Such a Cool Project šŸ™‚ I grew up on and around farms and farm life still calls to me. Loving your photos – the closeup of the chickens is my favorite and those are some very healthy cows too. Happy Photographing – Happy Day – Enjoy!
